One of the reasons that I love L.A. is that it attracts people from all over the world. If you go into a restaurant near LAX or in Hollywood or Westwood, you will hear people speaking a multitude of languages. At the table in the corner is a trio of your men dressed in earth-toned t-shirts and slightly faded jeans. They are laughing heartily and speaking German. Across from them is a mother and daughter, sharing a salad. Mom is holding her little daughter’s hand and helping her eat croutons; all the while telling the daughter in Spanish how good the food is and how much she loves her. It’s moments like those that remind me how large the world really is and also how small it can feel.

I was having breakfast the other day at Denny’s near LAX. I was in between appointments and waiting for my ham and cheese omelet, when I heard a lady a few tables over complain to the server that her eggs were cold. The server apologized and offered to either microwave the eggs to warm them up or replace them with a fresh plate. The lady said no to both offers and said that she was ok. But, she wasn’t. After the server left, the lady told her husband how upset she was about having to eat cold eggs. I could see and hear from across the room where I was sitting that she was getting more and more upset as each second ticked off the clock. Finally she called the manager over to her table and expressed to him her extreme dissatisfaction with her cold egg breakfast. As the manager tried to resolve the situation, I thought to myself, here is a lesson for all of us. This lady chose to be miserable instead of accepting a solution that would make her happy. As I thought about this, I was reminded of the times in my own life when I had chosen to travel down similar paths and ended up with similar results. So I invite you to in 2009 to join me in making a commitment to choose help over frustration and solutions over bitterness.

If you have been to the website recently, you may have noticed that Moving Forward has a new look. Thanks to the wonders of technology, I was able to make a couple of changes to the book; changes that should make it easier to read and use. First, I changed the cover. Thanks to Ruth Bury of Grassroots Design, the cover is more professional looking and inviting than the first one. Next, I made the font larger and more readable. Several readers mentioned to me that they thought the font was a bit too small, so we made it bigger. And finally, I added an index. Now readers can turn to the back of the book and find a guide to all the places in the book where a particular topic is discussed. I am very excited about the changes we made to the second edition and look forward to its release sometime during the month of February.
Thanks again for walking with me on this journey. I really do appreciate your companionship.
